Why the Mets’ first month was unusually quiet around Citi Field

Citi Field had the feel of an Old West ghost town too often in April, despite the Mets’ respectable play that had outperformed many predictions of doom and gloom for the club.

The Mets averaged just 24,477 fans per home game for the month. It represented a significant dip from last season, when the team averaged 30,605 fans per home game in April.

Across town, the Yankees averaged 37,779 fans per home game this April, which ranked fifth in the major leagues.

So it isn’t all about the cruddy New York weather when wondering about the no-shows in Queens.
